Mary Poppins Returns Bert Bound
I didn’t think I was going to be super excited for this movie, but the premiere began to approach, the excitement hit me full force. My friends and I had a plan to see Mary Poppins opening weekend at the El Capitan in Hollywood, but little did we know Disney had something up their sleeves and was going to invite us to opening night. I may have shed a little tear when I received an invite, I was that excited! I knew I had to plan the perfect outfit for the night and I had always wanted to bound as Bert for Dapper Day. I figured what’s a better time to rock this bound than at opening night!
As many of you know, I live for a comfy and casual, yet stylish outfit. This bound had to be the “Andi” version of Bert, so I began searching up and down on every site for the perfect pieces.
I popped into Forever 21 a couple days before and found the closest shirt to Bert’s look. I am usually a thrifter, but with my work schedule, I didn’t have time to search for days. I was ready to shell out $15 for the top, but when the cashier rang it up, the price was only $4— score!
The next piece I needed was a newsboy style hat, one of my favorite accessories and the perfect “Andi” take on Bert’s straw hat. I found one at Target and picked up orange, red, and white ribbon at Hobby Lobby to match the one found on his hat. I purchased three different size ribbons and layered one on top of the other using fabric glue, then hand sewed it on the hat to ensure it stayed on all night. I prefer sewing when it comes to a DIY not only to make it stay longer, but also to repurpose the pieces. Make sure to use bigger stitches for easy removal.
The last part of my outfit, which was by far the hardest to find were my overalls. White was a must as it pulled together the look, but finding this color during the winter season was definitely a challenge. I searched every website and checked out quite a few stores with no luck. The night before the movie I decided to take my chances at a local thrift store. As I sifted through the racks of pants, I prayed I would find something, but had no luck again. I decided to take a look at the overalls sections with little hope I would find anything. I turned the corner and to my surprise there was one lone pair of white overalls hanging on the rack. Everything was pushed back on the rack leaving this pair on display for me, it was practically fate! Even better they were GAP and an XS for $8. They were quite long and flared, but I knew I could make it work somehow. I decided to cut the legs to more of a crop and toss them in the washer and dryer creating an un-hemmed look — my favorite style of jeans!
I was running out of time, so I clipped on this little barrette to my overalls as a last ditch effort to recreate Bert’s bowtie and the outfit was complete!
I had an absolute blast at the opening night of Mary Poppins Returns! Emily Blunt was absolutely brilliant in her portrayal of such a classic character and Lin Manuel Miranda’s Jack perfectly played homage to Bert. Each song throughout the film was a hit and I have found myself listening to the soundtrack everyday. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, then head over to your nearest theater as soon as possible!
Thank you to Disney and the El Capitan Theatre for a practically perfect night!
